Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Hunter on Monday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team returned to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex after competing in THE Spring Games over the team's spring break. Old Westbury played host to Hunter College for a non-conference softball doubleheader. The Panthers were defeated in the first game, 4-3 and were victorious in the late game, 7-4.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – Hunter (4)
The Panthers recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Alaina Reilly singled up the middle. 
 
Neither team was able to put up a run until the top of the third inning. Hunter scored the first two runs of the game on two hits. The Hawks led one runner on base to end the inning. 
 
In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers answered with three runs. The team combined for four hits courtesy of Ashley Pierce, Madison Danin, Gianna DiLillo, and Jessica Tucci. 
 
With the score now 3-2 in favor of Old Westbury, the game remained locked up until the top of the sixth inning. 
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Hawks scored the tying run after an early double and a single to drive in the runner. 
 
The Panthers could not answer back in the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 
Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Hawks capitalized off an error made by the Panthers and scored the go-ahead run. The Hawks led 4-3. 
 
Old Westbury could not respond in the final half inning. The Hawks held on and defeated the Panthers in the early game of the doubleheader, 4-3. 
 
Alaina Reilly went 2-3 at the dish. Gianna DiLillo had another impressive showing finishing with a hit and two RBIs. Madison Danin went 2-4 at the plate tonight. Jessica Tucci had a great game and went 2-3 at the plate, with an RBI. 
 
Julia Pastrana pitched the entire game and struck out two batters. She allowed eight hits and four runs. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (7) – Hunter (4)
Hunter came out of the gates strong, putting up three runs in the first inning. 
 
The Panthers responded in the second inning when Angelina Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing DiLillo to score. 
 
Heading in to the bottom of the fifth inning, the score was tied 3-3. Reilly launched a double to left center field allowing Gianna Ventiere to score another run. A few at-bats later, Danin had an RBI single to right field, allowing Amanda Varela who pinch ran to score. 
 
The Panthers added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 
In the top of the seventh inning, Hunter made a late push to complete the comeback but their efforts were to no avail. The Hawks scored a run in the final frame. The Panthers held on and defeated the Hawks 7-4. 
 
Alaina Reailly amassed another two hits in four at bats. She also had an RBI. Gianna DiLillo went 2-2 and had two runs. Heather Dillon, Amanda Varela and Phylicia Cangemi each scored a run after pinch hitting. 
 
The pitching duties were carried by Layla Ramos. With the win, Ramos moves to 4-1 on the year. Ramos faced 33 batters and struck out five. Ramos allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned). 
 
Next up, the Panthers will return to conference play. The Panthers will play host to the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Sunday, April 7. The first game will begin at 12 PM from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
