Baseball Scores 11 Straight Runs to Surge Past New Jersey City University on Tuesday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to take down the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Tuesday night, 11-5.

The Panthers trailed 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning. From there, the team went on an 11-0 run in the late innings.

The rally began in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mike Petrucelly singled to left field. Three at-bats later, Joe Morreale singled to center field, allowing Petrucelly to score the Panthers' first run of the afternoon. Brian McCloskey doubled on the next at bat, allowing Cayden Ysidro who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning to score.

After a pitching change by NJCU, Jacob Taormina hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field, allowing Morreale to tag-up and score from third. Jamie Barrios hit another double on the following at-bat which scored McCloskey from third. At this point, the Panthers trailed by only one run, 4-5.

The rally continued in the bottom of the fifth inning when James Sill led off with a single up the middle. Nick Giovanakis also singled allowing Sill to move into scoring position. Morreale continued his strong outing with a double that would score Sill and move Giovanakis to third, who then scored on a wild pitch.

With the score now 6-5 in favor of Old Westbury, Taormina got on base first in the inning with a single. He would advance to second due to a throwing error by the Gothic Knights. The reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, Sill sent the ball soaring out of the park with another homerun. This was Sill's third straight game with a homerun.

Now leading, 8-5, the Panthers tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Louis Peluso, McCloskey and Morreale.

The Panthers held on to their lead and closed out the game in the final two innings. The Panthers defeated the Gothic Knights by a final score of 11-5. This win moves the Panthers to 8-8 on the 2024 season.

Jamie Barrios continues to dominate at the dish. Barrios finished the game with three hits in four at-bats and had three RBIs. James Sill went 2-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a homerun.  Joe Morreale, who started at third base for the first time this season, went 4-5, recording two runs and two RBIs.
