Baseball Downed by Purchase on Saturday

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was defeated in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader by the Panthers of Purchase College. The final scores were 15-3 and 9-5 in favor of Purchase. The Panthers fall to 8-10 on the season and 4-2 in conference play. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (3) – Purchase (15)
Old Westbury struggled from the start as they quickly found themselves down by four runs at the end of the second inning. 
 
The runs continued to pile on for Purchase as they added another ten runs before OW could score any. 
 
The Panthers of OW scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Going into the final inning of play, Purchase led 15-2. 
 
OW was able to tack on another two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Unfortunately, the Panthers of Purchase held on and defeated Old Westbury by a final score of 15-3. 
 
Jamie Barrios continued his strong hitting at the plate. Barrios went 3-4 with a run and an RBI. The only other Panthers to record hits were Mateo Martinez, Jason Carrion, James Sill and Troy Emmanuel
 
On the mound, Sill was charged with the loss. Sill faced 22 batters and struck out three. He allowed six hits and seven total runs. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (5) – Purchase (9)
In the day's second game, Purchase got the best of Old Westbury. Both sides finished the game with 10 runs a piece. 
 
OW found themselves trailing 2-0 after two innings. The Panthers responded with three runs thanks to a three-run shot from Rob Manetta, giving the Panthers the lead. 
 
By the fifth inning, Purchase had reclaimed the lead, 5-3. 
 
The two sides went back-and-forth for a few innings, but the Purchase Panthers managed to pull away and secure the victory. Purchase defeated Old Westbury, 9-5. 
 
Mateo Martinez and Rob Manetta each recorded two hits for the Panthers. Jamie Barrios went 1-5 at the plate and recorded two RBIs. In addition to his hits, Martinez recorded another stolen base. 
 
As for the pitching, the Panthers stater was Frank Whitenack who faced 24 batters and struck out three. Rob Manetta came in for an inning of relief work in the end. Manetta allowed two hits and four runs. Manetta notched another two strikeouts on his season total. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will travel to take on Maritime in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The games will take place on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 12 PM.
