Men's Volleyball Falls to Manhattanville on Thursday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team was defeated by the Valiants of Manhattanville College on Tuesday night, 3-0. 
 
The Panthers entered Thursday night's game after securing their first win in program history against Yeshiva on Tuesday. 
 
From the start the Panthers picked up several points off Manhattanville mishaps. The first match was the closest of the night. Things were pretty close in the early going. With the score 7-8, Manhattanville, the Panthers went on a three-point scoring run consisting of two Valiant errors and a service ace from Val Holmes
 
Both sides went back-and-forth for some time until the Panthers began to pull away in the late going. The Panthers led 21-19. 
 
After a timeout, Manhattanville rallied back and brought things to even. The Valiants managed to go on another run to close out the set and score three straight points to win the set. The Valiants took the first set, 26-24. 
 
In the second set, the Panthers made several errors of their own. OW struggled through the set, including four errors as a team and only four kills. Manhattanville held the lead for the entire second set and managed to take down the Panthers relatively easily, 25-17. 
 
In what would be the final set of the match, Manhattanville scored five straight unanswered points to open the set. The Panthers responded with a run of their own consisting of four points thanks to three Manhattanville errors and a service ace from Ashel Santos
 
Manhattanville found their grove again and got into a rhythm that would send them through the finish line in the third set, Manhattanville took the third set of the match by a score of 25-18. The Valiants won the match, defeating the Panthers 3-0. 
 
Despite the loss, the Panthers were led in kills by Anthony Moyett who finished with five. Kosta Anagnostou recorded seven assists and a service ace. Another key contributor for the Panthers was Val Holmes who continues to shine. Holmes finished with three blocks and a service ace. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will travel to take on Bryn Athyn on Saturday, March 9. The two sides will play a doubleheader with the first match beginning at 2 PM. The Panthers return to Skyline Conference play on Monday night when the team heads to New Jersey to take on New Jersey City University for a Skyline Conference match.
