Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Centenary in Season Opener on Wednesday Afternoon

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse team opened the season with a loss to the Cyclones of Centenary on Wednesday afternoon with a final score of 4-12. 
 
The game was played at the St. Joseph's University-Long Island Outdoor Athletic Complex due to heavy rain affecting the Panther's home field at Panther Park. There was heavy rain that went on and off throughout the entirety of the game. 
 
On top of the conditions, the Panthers struggled throughout the game to get things going on the offensive end.  
 
The Cyclones scored first and fast. The first goal of the game was recorded by Trista Hough, just 40 seconds into the contest. Centenary then piled on two more unanswered goals.
 
The first goal of the game and season for Old Westbury came with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The man-up goal was scored by Ava Savino who was assisted by Joann Williams
 
The opening quarter came to a close with the Cyclones ahead, 3-1.
 
The Cyclones connected first in the second quarter thanks to their leading scorer Nora Dornich. The Panthers were able to respond within seconds, thanks to a timely free-position goal from Sarah Boubert
 
With the score now 5-2 in favor of Centenary, the Panthers scored once again. This time it was Joann Williams
 
The first half ended with a score of 5-3 with the Cyclones out in front. 
 
The Panthers came out of the break looking to comeback. They hit the first goal of the second half when Geanelle Sam sent a free-position shot through the net. The Panthers found themselves within one goal. 
 
Centenary responded well with three straight unanswered goals to grow their lead and begin to walk away. The Cyclones went into the final period of play ahead, 8-4. 
 
The entire fourth quarter was controlled by the Cyclones. They managed to force several crucial turnovers from the Panthers and piled onto their lead while holding OW scoreless. 
 
The Cyclones added on four more goals in the fourth quarter. Centenary came out on top, defeating Old Westbury by a final score of 12-4.
 
Despite the outcome, the Panthers had several key contributors in the season opener. Veteran Goalkeeper Kathleen Mackey finished the day with 13 saves while Centenary took 25 shots on goal. Joann Williams finished the game with two points, consisting of one assist and a goal. Another contributor to the Panthers' efforts was Sarah Boubert who took four shots and scored a goal. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will face off against Wells College on Sunday, March 10 at 1 PM. The game will be played on the campus of USMMA due to field conditions.
