Baseball Splits Doubleheader with John Jay on Saturday; Team Secures First Win of the 2024 Campaign

YAPHANK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team picked up their first win of the season in the early game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Bloodhounds of John Jay College. The Panthers were victorious, 8-2. The Panthers fell to the Bloodhounds in the second game, 3-0.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (8)- John Jay (2)

The Panthers looked sharp from the start as their starter, Frank Whitenack, sat the first three batters down in order, striking out two batters. Robbie Manetta had quite the day, getting his first hit in the bottom of the first inning through the left side.

Old Westbury would score their first runs of the day in the bottom of the third inning when Jamie Barrios crossed the plate thanks to a sacrifice hit by Manetta. Nick Papageroge, who returned to the lineup as the designated hitter today doubled on the following at-bat, scoring Mateo Martinez. Papageorge would be brought home by a single from Mike Petrucelly.

As the first game entered the top of the fourth inning, the Panthers led 3-0. John Jay answered in the inning with two runs of their own. The Panthers committed an error, allowing the Bloodhounds to score two unearned runs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Panthers scored two more runs thanks to a double to left field from Mateo Martinez, scoring Jacob Taormina and Brian McCloskey. On the next at-bat, Martinez scored thanks to another timely hit from Manetta.

The Panthers picked up two more strikeouts in the top of the fifth inning thanks to Kyle Gaertner.

The final runs of the game for the Panthers were scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Manetta blasted a triple to center field. Martinez and McCloskey scored once again to grow the Old Westbury lead to 8-2. The Panthers held on and defeated John Jay 8-2 picking up the team's first win of the 2024 campaign.

On the mound for OW, Whitenack finished with four strikeouts. He faced 15 batters and allowed only three hits and two runs. In relief, Gaertner went 3.1 innings and struck out three batters. He faced 16 batters, allowing three hits.

Manetta and McCloskey both finished the game with three hits each. Manetta led the way, recording four RBIs. Jamie Barrios, Martinez, Manetta, Papageorge and McCloskey all hit doubles in the game.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (0)- John Jay (3)

The second game of the day was a different story for OW. The Panthers struggled to find their way on base, making it difficult to keep up with the Bloodhounds.

John Jay scored their first run right from the start in the top of the first inning after a wild throw that scored a runner from third base. John Jay held their 1-0 lead until they scored another run that was unearned in the top of the third inning.

The Bloodhounds sent one yard in the top of the fourth inning as Bowmen sent one over the left field fence.

With a 3-0 deficit, the Panthers could not manage to find a way to drive in runs. The Bloodhounds held on and finished the game with the victory, splitting the doubleheader with the Panthers.

Despite the struggled, the Panthers finished the game with five hits as a team. Manetta continued his strong play, picking up another two hits in the second game of the day. Taormina and Barrios each recorded another hit. Nick Giovanakis who played in the second game got a hit after going to the plate in three at-bats.

Louis Pizzileo recorded four strikeouts on the mound. While facing 17 batters, he allowed six hits and two runs. Michael Pokorny pitched two innings and struck out three of the seven batters he faced.

Next up, the Panthers will open Skyline Conference play. Old Westbury will play host to Yeshiva University on Friday, March 15. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 11 AM at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
