Baseball Falls to Maritime in Both Games of Saturday's Doubleheader

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team was swept in Saturday's doubleheader on the road against the Privateers of Maritime College. The scores of each game were 9-6 and 10-1, respectively. The Panthers now fall to an overall record of 8-12, with a conference record of 4-4.

Game One - SUNY Old Westbury (6) – Maritime (9)

Maritime jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after 4 innings. The Privateers scored two runs in the second, three in the third and added one in the fourth.

Old Westbury quickly responded in the fifth inning adding two runs courtesy of RBI singles from Jamie Barrios and Mateo Martinez.

The gap shrunk even more in the sixth inning as the Panthers scored three runs through a two RBI double by Joe Morreale and an RBI double from Brian McCloskey.

The Privateers would seal the game in the bottom-half of the sixth, where they scored three more runs which gave them the insurance needed to close out the 9-6 victory.

Joe Morreale was the standout hitter going 2-4 with his 2 RBI double in the fifth inning.

Old Westbury outperformed Maritime in the hit category 11-9, but the Panthers walked five Privateer batters while Old Westbury only walked twice themselves.

James Sill started the game for Old Westbury on the mound. He pitched three innings, giving up five runs on six hits while striking out three batters.

Game Two - SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Maritime (10)

The second game of the day once again started fast for Maritime as they jumped out to 6-0 lead after the first inning.

The Privateers went up by double-digits after a four-run fourth inning.

Old Westbury scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning courtesy of Jacob Taormina's baserunning, scoring on a wild pitch after getting on base with a double earlier in the inning.

The Panthers led the way with 10 hits compared to Maritime's nine. The walks were a problem for the Panthers as they walked seven Privateer batters and only walked once themselves.

Rob Manetta had an impressive outing in relief, pitching four innings, and striking out seven batters with zero earned runs and two hits.

Next up for Old Westbury is a non-conference matchup at home against Saint Elizabeth University of the United East Conference in Division III. The game is set to begin at 5 PM on Tuesday, April 9 at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
