Softball Falls to Farmingdale in the First Two Conference Games of the Year

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was defeated in both games of Sunday's doubleheader against the Rams of Farmingdale State College. The final scores were 9-1 and 10-5, respectively.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (1) – Farmingdale (9)

The game got going in favor of the Rams who scored a run in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead.

The Panthers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Gianna DiLillo who reached on a fielder's choice and scored Heather Dillon who pinch ran. The score was now tied going into the third inning.

Farmingdale took advantage of a few Panther mistakes in the top of the third inning when they scored a total of five runs. The Rams went up, 6-1.

Things continued to go in the Rams' favor as they piled on another run in the top of the fourth inning.

With the score now 7-1, the Panthers could not find a way to rally. The Rams tacked on another two runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it an eight-run lead. The Rams held on to defeat the Panthers 9-1 in six innings in the day's early game.

The only Panthers to record hits were Natalie Intrieri and Madison Danin. Heather Dillon scored the lone run for the Panthers thanks to an RBI from Gianna DiLillo

In the circle, Julia Pastrana got the start for OW. She pitched 2.1 innings and allowed six hits and five runs. In relief, Taylor Murphy faced nine batters and allowed three hits. Christina Ravo made another pitching appearance. Ravo recorded the lone strikeout for the Panthers and allowed only two runs.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (5) – Farmingdale (10)

In the second game of the day, the script was flipped to start. The Panthers got things going first. In the bottom of the first inning, Ashely Pierce scored off a single from Madison Danin

The Panthers held their 1-0 lead until the top of the third inning when Farmingdale responded with two runs of their own to go up 2-1.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers rallied to regain the lead. Pierce singled down the left field line, which allowed Phylicia Cangemi to score after pinch running earlier in the inning.

The Panthers added their next run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Reilly launched a two run double that scored Natalie Intrieri and Gianna Ventiere. OW held a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.

The Rams began a rally in the top of the sixth inning that would score four runs to put them ahead by one. Farmingdale made sure to capitalize off a few costly errors by the Panthers.

The Panthers could not rally in either the bottom of the sixth or seventh innings. Farmingdale pulled away with the victory and defeated the Panthers, 10-5.

Natalie Intrieri went 2-4, scoring two runs. Alaina Reilly finished the second game with two hits, three RBIs and a walk. Madsion Danin also had a strong outing as she recorded two hits, and an RBI. Angelina Fernandez went 2-3 at the dish.

The pitching duties were led by Layla Ramos who was charged with only her second loss on the season. Ramos faced a total of 36 batters and allowed 12 hits, 10 runs and seven earned runs.

Next up for the Panthers will be a non-conference doubleheader. The Panthers will welcome Baruch College to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Thursday, April 11 at 4 PM. Following that, the Panthers will return to Skyline Conference play as they host Yeshiva University on Friday, April 12 at 10 AM.
