Baseball Sweeps Mount Saint Mary on Sunday, As They Put Together a Combined 26 Runs

YAPHANK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team had a dominant showing on Sunday as they defeated the Knights of Mount Saint Mary in both ends of their doubleheader. The Panthers took the first game by a final score of 9-3 and the second game by a final score of 17-9.

With these two wins, the Panthers move to 12-13 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. 
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (9) – Mount Saint Mary (3)
 
The Panthers got things going early when Nick Papageorge connected on a single up the middle to score two runs thanks to Jaime Barrios and Jacob Taormina. Papageorge's two early RBIs helped put the Panthers ahead 2-0 going into the second inning. 
 
In the bottom of the second inning, Mike Petrucelly blasted a ball out of the park for a home run to help the Panthers grow their lead. 
 
The Knights responded in the top of the third by putting up a run off of a sacrifice hit. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Petrucelly had a repeat at-bat, hitting another home run and his ninth of the season to put the Panthers ahead 4-1. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Panthers added some more insurance runs. Rob Manetta singled to right field to score two runs, Nick Papageorge walked and allowed Barrios to score on a wild pitch, and James Sill had a three-run homer. 
 
The Knights responded in the final half inning with two runs of their own, but it was to no avail. The Panthers walked away with the victory by a final score of 9-3. 
 
Jacob Taormina, Rob Manetta, and Mike Petrucelly each had two hits throughout the game. Nick Papageorge and James Sill each had three RBIs while Petrucelly had two, thanks to his two home runs. 
 
On the mound, Kenneth Dow got the win after pitching five innings. In his outing, Dow allowed only one run and six hits while striking out two batters. 
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (17) – Mount Saint Mary (9)


 The Panthers offense exploded in game two of the day. The two teams went back-and-forth but the Panthers grabbed the lead and ran away with it. 
 
As a team, the Panthers scored 17 runs, and recorded 19 hits, and eight walks. The Panthers hit seven home runs and a double. On the bases, OW had two stolen bases. 
 
Rob Manetta went 3-5 and had three runs and two RBIs. James Sill had a standout day going 4-6 with four runs and four RBIs. Sill had two home runs and a double. Nick Papageorge had a strong showing going. 500 at the plate. Papageorge had a home run, three runs and two RBIs. 
 
The pitching duties were shared throughout the game. Don Whalen got the win after a relief appearance. Whalen pitched 1.2 innings and allowed three hits and three runs, picking up a strikeout. Rob Manetta recorded his first save of the season as he threw 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs. Manetta struck out two batters. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will welcome the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University-Long Island to the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The Skyline Conference doubleheader will take place on Saturday, April 20 at 12 PM.
