Softball Takes Care of Business On the Road, Sweeping Both Games Against St. Joseph’s-Long Island on Sunday

PATCHOUGE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team returned to their winning ways by sweeping the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University-Long Island in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The final scores were 4-1 and 14-3, respectively.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – St. Joseph's-Long Island (1)

The Panthers found their stride coming off two tough losses to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn earlier in the week.
 
Old Westbury scored the first runs of the early game in the top of the third inning thanks to Ashley Pierce who had a two RBI single up the middle allowing both Alaina Reilly and Natalie Intreiri to score. Pierce's hit put the Panthers ahead 2-0.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, the Panthers grew the margin even more. Heather Dillon, who pinch ran, scored on an errant throw after stealing third base. Later in the inning, Gianna DiLillo singled to left field allowing Phylicia Cangemi to score and grow the Panthers' lead to 4-0.
 
The Golden Eagles tacked on their one and only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it was to no avail. The Panthers held on and walked away with the early game victory by a final score of 4-1.
 
Several Panthers players had an impressive game. Natalie Intreri went 2-3 at the dish, scoring a run. Ashley Pierce had a powerful performance as she finished with a hit and two RBIs. Gianna DiLillo continues to be a key piece to the middle of the lineup. DiLillo finished the game with two hits and an RBI.
 
Layla Ramos secured her seventh victory of the season as she had another impressive showing in the circle. Ramos pitched the entire game and faced 27 batters. Ramos allowed only four hits and one run.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (14) – St. Joseph's-Long Island (3)
 
The Panthers' saw an offensive explosion in the late game of Sunday's doubleheader.
 
The first OW run came in the top of the second inning when Angelina Fernandez singled up the middle to drive in Heather Dillon, who pinch ran.
 
The top of the fourth inning was a big one for the Panthers as they scored nine runs as a team. Madison Muehling drew a walk with the bases loaded to score a run. Phylicia Cangemi had an infield RBI single that scored Madison Danin, Juliana Vasquez and Natalie Intrieri each drew walks to score two runs.

With the score 5-0, Alaina Reilly came to bat and came up big for the Panthers as she had a massive two run double to right field. In the following at-bat, Ashley Pierce recorded another RBI on the day with a single to left field.
 
Madison Danin notched an RBI double to keep the rally going. Danin's double scored Reilly.
 
Jessica Tucci, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, recorded an RBI with her ground out to first. At the close of the fourth inning, the Panthers led by a score of 10-0.
 
The Panthers' defensive skills were tested in the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles rallied to put up three runs to eliminate the fifth inning run rule.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Panthers led 10-3 before another OW rally.
 
Danin kicked things off with another RBI double. Later in the inning, Gianna DiLillo picked up another RBI.
 
To keep the rally alive Hillary Bennet, who pinch hit, singled to right field allowing Danin to score yet another run. Intrieri was able to draw another walk amid the pitching struggles of SJLI.
 
The Panthers held their ground in the bottom of the sixth inning and ended things early. Old Westbury completed the sweep with the victory in game two by a final score of 14-3.
 
Alaina Reilly continues to dominate. Reilly finished the game with two hits, two RBIs and a run. Natalie Intrieri also picked up two more RBIs and drew two walks and a run.
 
Ashley Pierce's bat was strong throughout the day. In the second game, the short stop went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs.
 
Madison Danin had an outstanding day at the dish. She went 3-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Danin hit two doubles in the late game alone.
 
Gianna DiLillo recorded one hit, one RBI and a run. Angelina Fernandez and Phylicia Cangemi each finished with a hit, a run and an RBI.
 
As a team, the Panthers recorded 12 hits, 14 RBIs and seven walks.
 
On the mound, Taylor Murphy pitched in all six innings. Murphy allowed seven hits and three runs. In the 27 batters she faced, Murphy struck out one and walked two.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue conference play as they get set for another road doubleheader. The team will travel to take on the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:30 PM.
