Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Takes Down Mount Saint Mary in Game One, Falls Short in Extra Innings in Game Two on Tuesday

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team split their conference doubleheader with the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday. The Panthers took the early game while the Knights won the second game in extra innings. The final scores were 2-0 and 1-0, respectively.

The two games were very low scoring as the high winds appeared to play a factor in both offenses.

After today, the Panthers now have an overall record of 15-9. The team sits at 5-5 in conference play.

Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (2) – Mount Saint Mary (0)

The Panthers got their first two hits of the game in the top of the second inning. In addition, OW found their way into the scoring column. Gianna DiLillo led off with an infield single. Later in the inning, Angelina Fernandez had an RBI single up the middle to score DiLillo.

In control of a 1-0 lead, the Panthers held their own defensively.

The only other run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning. Natalie Intrieri led off with a single up the middle. Intrieri then stole second base to move into scoring position. Alaina Reilly blasted a double up the middle to record another RBI to score Intrieri.

With a 2-0 lead, the Panthers did not allow any runs or hits through the final 2.5 innings of the game.

The Panthers held on to win the first game by a final score of 2-0.

Alaina Reilly continues to shine offensively. Reilly finished the game with two hits in four at-bats with an RBI. Another key contributor was Gianna DiLillo who scored a run. DiLillo went 1-3 at the dish. Angelina Fernandez recorded one hit and an RBI.

In the circle, Layla Ramos' pitching kept the opponent in check once again. Ramos pitched a complete game shutout, facing all 23 Knight's batters. Ramos allowed only two hits and struck out three batters.

Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Mount Saint Mary (1) [Eight innings]

The two sides flipped in the second game as Old Westbury struggled to hit the ball effectively.

The Panthers saw their first hit of the game in the top of the second inning when Taylor Murphy hit a double down the right field line.

As the two sides remained locked in a scoreless battle, the only other two OW hits came in the top of the sixth inning.

Ashley Pierce had a single to right field. On the following at-bat, Madison Danin doubled to right allowing Pierce to move into scoring position. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not drive in the runner and the game remained tied at 0-0.

The Knights put the pressure on the Panthers in the bottom of the seventh inning when two runners got on base. The Panthers were able to complete an impressive double play to force the game into extra innings.

The Panthers got a runner on base in the top of the eighth when Natalie Intrieri got on base thanks to an error by the Knights. Unfortunately, Intrieri would be left on the base path.

Mount Saint Mary would break the tie and score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning off an RBI single to score the runner who was on second. The Knights defeated the Panthers, 1-0.

The only three hits of the game for the Panthers belonged to Ashley Pierce, Madison Danin, and Taylor Murphy. Danin and Murphy doubled and Pierce singled.

In the circle for the second game, Julia Pastrana got the start. Pastrana faced 36 batters and pitched all 7.2 innings. Pastrana allowed 10 hits and the game's lone run. She also struck out two batters.
