Softball Defeated by John Jay in Extra Innings on Tuesday Night

BRONX, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was defeated by the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on Tuesday night as the two sides met for a single game. The final score was 1-0 in favor of John Jay.

The Panthers showcased many of their reserve players throughout the night. Old Westbury finished with only two hits on the night and could not find a way to score a run.

The first spark of offense did not come until the top of the fourth inning for the Panthers. Phylicia Cangemi connected on a single to the Bloodhounds' shortstop. The next three Panthers to come to the plate would be out leading Cangemi stranded on the base path.

The next hit for Cangemi came in the top of the sixth inning, but she would be caught stealing for the team's third out of the inning.

Old Westbury had a nice defensive stance to keep things alive in the bottom of the seventh inning. John Jay committed a mistake on the basepath as they had a careless error with two runners in scoreing position. The Panthers escaped the inning thanks to a heads up play by Gianna Ventiere, who was OW's catcher.

The two teams needed extra innings to decide a winner due to the lack of offense throughout the night.

The three batters to come to the dish for Old Westbury would be retired.

John Jay capitalized and scored the game winning run on an infield single since the bases were loaded. The Bloodhounds defeated the Panthers in eight innings by a final score of 1-0.

For the Panthers, Phylicia Cangemi had the only two hits for the team in her three at-bats. Hillary Bennett had a strong night in the field as she made some massive grabs at second base. Bennett had seven POs.

Taylor Murphy started the game in the circle for Old Westbury. Murphy faced 12 batters and struck out three. Murphy allowed only one hit and two walks in the three innings she pitched. Christina Ravo would be the next arm up for OW. Ravo struck out one batter and did not allow a hit or run through two innings. Hailey Ragozine was the final relief pitcher for the Panthers. Ragozine was charged with the loss as she allowed six hits and the game's lone run.

Next up, the Panthers will return to conference play as they will take on the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday night. The conference doubleheader will take place the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex but will be a home game for the UMSV. The first game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM.
