Softball Takes Down Both No. 3 St. Joseph’s Brooklyn and No. 1 Farmingdale to Advance in the Skyline Conference Championship

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team is advancing again after taking down both the No. 3 Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn and the No. 1 Rams of Farmingdale State College. The Panthers took down the Bears by final score of 9-2 and Farmingdale, 7-2.
 
The Panthers victory over Farmingdale was the team's first time on top since 2017.To this point, the Panthers have defeated the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 seeded teams.
 
Old Westbury will now face off against the No. 2 Valiants of Manhattanville University tomorrow, May 11. OW will need to secure two wins against the Valiants to be crowned champions. The first game will take place at 1 PM.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (9) – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (2)
 
The Panthers scored right away in the top of the first inning after Natalie Intrieri reached on an error, allowing Alaina Reilly to score.
 
In the top of the second inning, the Panthers tacked on three more runs after Gianna DiLillo singled to third base to score Heather Dillon who pinch ran. Alaina Reilly then singled to right field advancing all the way to third on a fielding error by the Bears. Old Westbury exited the second inning with a 4-0 lead.
 
The Panthers grew their lead in the top of the third inning when Madison Muehling hit her first collegiate home run to left field.
 
The Bears responded in the bottom of the third off a homer of their own.
 
With the score, 5-1, the Panthers scored two runs after another DiLillo single and a Bears' fielding error.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Panthers added two more insurance runs courtsey of Muehling and Angelina Fernandez singles.
 
The Bears did not give up without a fight as they scored a run in the sixth inning. The Panthers held on to defeat the No. 4 ranked Bears by a final score of 9-2.
 
Alaina Reilly was the Panthers leadoff hitter for the first time this season. Reilly went 2-3 with an RBI and a run. Reilly drew two walks. Madison Danin went 2-5. Madison Muehling went 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs.
Gianna DiLillo also had a strong game, going 2-4 at the plate scoring two runs and an RBI.
 
Layla Ramos threw the entire game. Ramos allowed only six hits, two runs and one walk. Ramos struck out one batter and faced 29.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (7) – Farmingdale (2)
 
The two sides were locked in a pitchers dual until the top of the fourth inning when Farmingdale went ahead, 2-0 after a two RBI single.
 
The Panthers remained focused and erased the Rams' lead thanks to a two RBI single from Ashley Pierce to score both Heather Dillon who pinch ran and Gianna DiLillo.
 
With the score 2-2, the Panthers escaped danger in the top of the sixth as Layla Ramos helped leave two Rams stranded on the basepath.
 
Old Westbury left their mark in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring five runs to win the game.
 
The scoring started when Hillary Bennett reached on an error allowing Faith Binaso to score as a pinch runner thanks to her heads-up base running. Next, DiLillo would single to the pitcher allowing Bennett to score. Alaina Reilly would then double to right field, scoring Gianna DiLillo.
 
Madison Danin's double allowed Reilly to score to give the Panthers a 6-2 lead.
 
The Panthers scored another when Pierce doubled down the left field line to score Danin from second base.
 
The Panthers shut down the Rams in the top of the seventh inning, and walked away with the victory. The Panthers defeated the Rams by a final score of 7-2.
There were several Panthers with impressive games. Alaina Reilly had another strong game as she went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Madison Danin had a hit, one run and an RBI. Ashley Pierce went 2-3 at the dish with three RBIs. Gianna DiLillo went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs. Madison Muehling and Angelina Fernandez each secured a hit.
 
Layla Ramos shined once again the circle. Ramos went all seven innings and allowed only six hits and two runs. Ramos threw both games in entirety for the Panthers on Friday.
 
Next up, the Panthers will face off against Manhattanville in the Skyline Conference Championship. The first game on Saturday will begin at 1 PM. Tickets and more information can be found on the Skyline Conference website.
