Softball Ready for the Skyline Conference Post Season Tournament; Panthers to Rematch Mount Saint Mary In Opening Round For Third Straight Season

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team is ready as they are set to travel to Mount Saint Mary once again for the first round of the Skyline Conference Softball Tournament. The Panthers are seeded No. 5 after finishing the regular season with a 21-12 overall record and a conference record of 11-7. 
 
This is the third consecutive season where the Panthers and Knights will meet in the opening round of the tournament. In 2023, the Knights came out on top by a final score of 2-0. In 2022, MSMC won, 1-9. 
 
Mount Saint Mary closed the 2024 campaign with a record of 17-21 record and finished 12-6 in conference. 
 
About the Skyline Conference Tournament:
Six teams will qualify for the conference's post-season tournament. The first round will feature the bottom four seeds which will each play a single elimination game to compete for a spot in the weekend's double elimination games. 
 
The first round will feature OW against MSMC. The other opening round game will be the No. 6 seed (which is still to be determined) against the Bears of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. 
 
Beginning on Thursday, May 9, the remaining teams will play in a double elimination tournament. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Game #1: Tuesday, May 7: #5 Old Westbury at #4 Mount Saint Mary - 3:30pm
Game #2: Tuesday, May 7: #6 seed (TBD) vs. #3 St. Joseph's Brooklyn @ Farmingdale -7pm
 
Game #3: Thursday, May 9: Winner of game one vs. #1 Farmingdale - 4:00pm
Game #4: Thursday, May 9: Winner of game two vs. #2 Manhattanville - 6:30pm
 
Game #5: Friday, May 10: Winner of game three vs. winner of game four  - 1:00pm
Game #6: Friday, May 10: Loser of game three vs. Loser of game four - 3:30pm
Game #7: Friday, May 10: Winner of game six vs. Loser of game five - 6:00pm
 
Game #8: Saturday, May 11: Winner of game five vs. Winner of game seven - Noon
Game #9: Saturday (if necessary) to follow…
 
 
Scouting the Panthers: 
The Panthers had one of their best seasons in recent history finishing with a record of 21-12 and finished conference play at 11-7. 
 
Old Westbury's pitching has been led by Layla Ramos who is in her first season with the Panthers. This year, Ramos tossed an ERA of 1.62 through 69 innings pitched. Ramos has allowed the second fewest runs in the Skyline Conference with only 30 runs allowed. 
 
Ramos has an opposing batting average of .231, placing her at fourth best in conference. She has allowed only 20 earned runs and has struck out a total of 51 batters. This season, Ramos has thrown a combination of no hitters and complete game shutouts. The ace has been a key part of the Panthers' success this season in her first year with the program. 
 
Alaina Reilly has had an incredible 2024 season. The starting third baseman has been a fixture in the heart of the Old Westbury starting lineup. To this point, Reilly has the third best batting average in the Skyline Conference. Reilly has the best on-base percentage and the second-best OPS. Reilly has drawn the most walks in the conference. This season, Reilly has amassed 40 hits, 20 runs, 20 RBIs, 13 doubles, one triple and a home run.
 
Madison Danin has impressed consistently this season as the team's designated player.  Danin finished the regular season with 43 hits, 16 runs and 21 RBIs. Danin had 12 doubles this season. Danin had the sixth best batting average at the close of the season in the Skyline Conference at .462. Danin had the seventh best slugging and on base percentage. The junior finished fifth in total doubles throughout the season.
 
Natalie Intrieri continued to lead the Panthers outfield in the 2024 campaign after finishing the 2023 season on the Skyline All-Conference Second Team. As a hitter, Intrieri finished the season with 33 hits, 28 runs and five RBIs. Intrieri hit for five doubles. Intrieri was a force on the base path as well as she recorded 15 stolen bases. Intrieri sits in the top 15 in runs batted in with 24. Intrieri has drawn the fourth most walks this season out of anyone in conference.
 
As a team, the Panthers compiled a batting average of .337. Old Westbury has amassed 278 hits, 202 runs, 166 RBIs, 58 doubles, six triples, and six home runs. 
 
 
Scouting the Knights:
The Knights defeated the Panthers in the first-round elimination game of the 2023 post season tournament. Following the first round, the Knights fell to Manhatanville University twice and defeated St Joseph's-Brooklyn once.  
 
This year, the Knights have been led by Grace MacDonald who is hitting .444. MacDonald has an OPS od .979 and has 28 hits on the campaign. In the circle, MacDonald has pitched an 11-13 record. She has an ERA of 3.52 and has allowed 103 runs and 77 earned runs. 
 
Chloe Graham is also having a strong year for the Knights as she has amassed a batting average of .327 with 34 hits, 18 runs and 19 RBIs.
 
As a team, the Knights are hitting .307. MSMC has 310 hits, 191 runs, 169 RBIs, 62 doubles, three triples and eight home runs.
