Men’s Soccer Falls Short in Season Opener Against Yeshiva on Sunday Night

TEANECK, N.J. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team was defeated by the Maccabees of Yeshiva University in their season opener on Sunday night by a final score of 1-0.

The Panthers hit the road and traveled to Teaneck. N.J. to face off in their opening game of the 2024 campaign. OW drew a conference matchup for their opening match of the season against Skyline Conference rival, Yeshiva.

The match was a physical battle in the first half with both the Panthers and Maccabees picking up a combined 11 fouls. The game was a defensive showdown for the first 45 minutes as neither team allowed a goal and each keeper recorded two saves.

In the second half, Yeshiva's offense seemed to find their groove as they attempted nine shots, with six total shots on goal in the match.

Yeshiva would find the net on their lone goal in the 59th minute on a nice pass from Andrea Lacche, allowing YU's Rafael Cohen to score.

The Panthers were unable to answer back despite taking eight shots in the second half.

The Panthers fell short in the end and fell to Yeshiva in the opening match of the season by a final score of 1-0.

Despite falling short, Roobens Celine had a strong offensive presence, taking five shots with three of them being on goal. Tiago Tirado took two shots. Christian Mathurin and First-Year Henrik Ropstad each took one shot a piece.

Andy Chacho had a nice game in goal for the Panthers. Chacho recorded five saves on six shots on goal and 14 total shots.

All in all, the Panthers efforts were to no avail in the season opener. Up next, Old Westbury will regroup and prepare for their first home game of the season. The Bloodhounds of John Jay are slated to come to Panther Park on Tuesday, September 3. That game will kick off at 3:30 PM.
