Men’s Soccer Takes Down John Jay in the Final Moments of Tuesday Afternoon’s Home Opener

 
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team defeated John Jay at home on Tuesday to give them their first win of the season. The Panthers defeated the Bloodhounds by a final score of 2-1.

The Panthers managed to come back and tie the game with just under eight minutes remaining. The Panthers would hold on and win the game with just under three minutes to go.

John Jay scored the games' first goal as Daniel Rosa would find the net off an assist from Marcel Tovar.

With a 1-0 lead, the Bloodhounds continued to play a physical game. Despite the Bloodhounds holding a lead, the Panthers had several attempts to put the ball through the net. The Panthers had eight shots in the first half compared to the Bloodhounds' two shots.

The Bloodhounds went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to put themselves into good position to make a move. Despite their efforts, and once again out shooting John Jay, Old Westbury could not find the net for the majority of the half.

The first hero of the afternoon for Old Westbury would be Henrik Ropstad who found the back of the net at the 82-minute mark to tie the game. Ropstad scored off an assist from Ashel Santos on a corner kick.
 
With just under four minutes to play, the Panthers were set up with yet another corner kick. After another impressive corner kick from Santos, Roobens Celine found the back of the net off a header to score the goal that would give the Panthers the late lead.
 
With a 2-1 lead, Old Westbury managed to close out the game and secure the win over John Jay at the team's home opener.
 
Ashel Santos played the entire match and finished with two assists. First-year Henrik Ropstad took a total of five shots with two on goal and scored once. Roobens Celine also took a total of five shots, with two on goal and scored the game winning goal.
 
Paul DeGennaro served as the Panthers goalkeeper. DeGennaro finished the afternoon with one save and allowed only one goal.
 
Next up, the Panthers will face of against Brooklyn College on the road on Saturday, September 7. That game is scheduled to begin at 12 PM. Following that, OW will return home on September 11 for a game against Lehman College at 3:30 PM.
