Women's Volleyball Unsuccessful Against John Jay and Penn on Friday

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team was defeated in both matchups of Friday's tri-match. The Panthers were taken down by the host's, John Jay, 3-0. Directly following that match, Old Westbury was unsuccessful against Penn College, 3-0.
 
The tri-match was hosted by John Jay College in New York, N.Y.

Match One- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – John Jay (3)

The Panthers found themselves down early as the Bloodhounds of John Jay took an early 7-0 lead in the opening set. OW found their first points of the set off an attacking error made by John Jay.
 
The Bloodhounds went on another rally to go up 11-1 before another John Jay error to give OW another point.
 
John Jay continued to put together runs and would comfortably take the opening set by a final score of 25-11.
 
In the second set, the Panthers combined for six total kills as a unit. Again, John Jay got out to another early lead as they went up 8-3.
 
A kill by Nicole Zugnoni followed by a Stephanie Maser service ace helped the Panthers close the gap slightly, but the Bloodhounds answered right back and would walk away to grow their lead.
 
John Jay held on and took the second set by a final score of 25-16.
 
In what would be the final set of the match, the Panthers went down big early yet again. John Jay possessed a 5-0 lead before Old Westbury scored their first point thanks to a kill by Geanelle Sam.
 
The Bloodhounds remained in the drivers seat as they controlled the third set. Old Westbury only managed to secure five team kills in the third set.
 
John Jay would take the final set by a score of 25-13.

Stephanie Maser led the team in kills with six. Maser also had a service ace and four digs. Stephanie Velez had two kills, and three digs. Amy Sanchez had three service aces.

Match Two- SUNY Old Westbury (0) – Penn College (3)

Unlike their match with John Jay, the Panthers and Wildcats of Penn College played this series close.
 
The opening set came down to the wire. The two sides went back-and-forth throughout the set. In the final points of the set, the Panthers held a 21-19 lead.
 
The Wildcats were able to secure six straight points to eventually take the first set victory, 25-21.
 
In the second set, the Panthers struggled to keep up with the Wildcats' intensity. As a team, the Panthers committed a costly five errors and only managed to record six total kills.
 
The Wildcats defeated the Panthers in the second set by a final score of 25-18.
 
The final set was a close battle. The Panthers brought the intensity as they managed to record 10 kills as a team. Neither team was able to grow much of a lead.
 
Old Westbury found themselves tied with Penn at 21-21.
 
Thanks to two kills and two service aces by the Wildcats, they managed to secure the third set and final victory by a score of 25-21.
 
In the match, Stephanie Maser led the team yet again in kills with nine. Maser also had four service aces and 13 digs. Another impressive performance came from Geanelle Sam who recorded two aces, one block, nine assists and 10 digs.
 
Despite their efforts throughout the day, the Panthers were unable to come up with a victory over John Jay or Penn.
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue their non-conference play with a match against Lehman on Saturday, September 21. That match is scheduled to begin at 12 PM. The following day, the Panthers will open conference play against Yeshiva at 1 PM.
