Men's Soccer Victorious Over Purchase in the Battle of the Panthers on Saturday Afternoon

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team came out on top in the Battle of the Panthers against the Panthers of Purchase College on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 4-2. 
 
Old Westbury now moves to 4-5-1 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. 
 
Old Westbury's first goal came courtesy of Ismael Ruiz just over 15 minutes into the game. Ruiz was assisted by Teixeria. 
 
Purchase responded just before half as Luca LiVigni scored to even the scoreboard. 
 
Both teams went into the break tied. 
 
In the second half, the Panthers of Old Westbury's offense shined as they took a total of 15 shots with 12 on goal in the second half. 
 
Jeffery Baires scored his first goal of the season off a nice assist from a Jose Sandoval to grow the score to 2-1. 
 
Ryan Persaud connected on a nice shot that found the back of the net just over the 67-minute mark. 
 
With just under a minute to play, Purchase made one last push at the win as they scored a goal to make it 3-2. 
 
A few seconds later, Henrik Ropstad found open space and scored a goal to give Old Westbury some insurance on the scoreboard. 
 
Old Westbury would hold on and defeat Purchase by a final score of 4-2. 
 
Henrik Ropstad took a total of three shots which were all on target including his late goal. Jeffrey Baires and Ismael Ruiz each scored a goal with multiple shot attempts. 
 
Off the bench, Ryan Persaud took two shots on goal and scored off one of them.
 
In net, Paul DeGennaro finished the game with five saves after facing seven shots on net. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road to face off against USMMA. That game is scheduled for Friday, October 4 at 7 PM. Following that, the team will remain on the road for a match against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday, October 9.
