Men's Basketball Drops Close Battle to Manhattanville on Saturday Night

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team dropped a close game to the Manhattanville University Valiants, 73-72. The Panthers now fall to 6-8 overall on the season on Saturday night.

The Panthers got off to a hot start taking an early 9-2 lead in the opening minutes of play. Old Westbury held on to the lead for the majority of the half until they started to get into some trouble late.

Kellen Leake gave the Panthers an 11-point lead with a layup with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. However, that lead quickly evaporated with the Valiants scoring 14 straight points to take their first lead of the game 30-27.  The Valiants expanded their lead to seven points by the end of the half leaving 39-32.

The Valiants continued their dominance at the start of the second half, expanding their lead to 14 points. However, the Panthers fought their way back, and inevitably tied the game at 60 when Jaden Flemming made a layup, and took their first lead in about 20 minutes of play with another layup from Amadi Lee-Kane.

After a lot of back-and-forth play between these two teams the Panthers took the lead 72-71 Zion Williams making one of his two free throws with 27 seconds left on the clock. The Valiants, with only two seconds left on the clock, got a turn on the free throw line, and they were able to make both of them to seal the win 73-72.

Amadi Lee-Kane led the Panthers 19 points followed by Zion Williams and Jaden Flemming who each had 13 points. Jamari Williams completed a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. As a team the Panthers shot 28-62 from the field and 7-21 from beyond the arc.

The Panthers are in action again at home on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. against Purchase College Panthers in the Clark Athletic Center.
