Men’s Basketball Takes Down Purchase in Final Seconds on Tuesday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team defeated the Panthers of Purchase on Tuesday night. The final score was 76-75 in favor of Old Westbury.
 
Old Westbury now improves to 7-8 overall on the season and 2-5 in conference play.
 
The game got off to a dominant start for Old Westbury as they found themselves ahead by 15 points just about seven minutes into the game. The offensive spark was led by Jamari Williams who had the team's first 11 points.
 
Purchase mounted a comeback and cut it to a four-point game just over three minutes later.  OW would remain in control of the lead for the remainder of the period until Purchase took the lead with 3:10 to go in the half.
 
The Panthers of Old Westbury would go into halftime with the lead thanks to a late steal by Amadi Lee-Kane who then put up the layup. Old Westbury went into halftime with a two-point advantage over Purchase, 40-38.
 
The second half was filled with excitement on both ends of the ball. Old Westbury grew their advantage to five points as Lee-Kane drained a three pointer less than a minute into the half.
 
From there, neither team would take a significant advantage on the scoreboard. Despite that, Purchase held on to a very slim advantage. The Panthers of Old Westbury tied things up with 2:38 on the scoreboard thanks to a layup from Joel Ofori down-low.
 
After a series of timeouts, the Panthers found themselves at the free-throw line with 25 seconds to play. Ofori went 1-2. After grabbing the rebound, Purchase was able to connect on a layup to go up by one. OW did not use one of their remaining timeouts. Lee-Kane connected on the game winning shot with just four tenths of a second on the clock.
 
Old Westbury went on to win by one, taking down Purchase by a final score of 76-75.
 
As a team, Old Westbury shot the ball 46 percent from the floor, 35 percent from behind-the-arc and 64 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Jamari Williams led OW in scoring as he finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one block and three steals. Williams went 3-6 from three-point range. Amadi Lee-Kane had 18 points, three boards, and a steal. Zion Williams finished the night with 16 points, four rebounds, nine assists, and a block. Bradley Young led the Panthers in rebounding as he finished with seven boards.

Next up, the Panthers will hit the road to take on the Maccabees of Yeshiva University for another Skyline Conference battle. The Panthers will take on the Maccabees on Saturday, January 25 at 8:30 PM.
