Men’s Basketball Takes Down St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn in First Conference Win on Wednesday Night

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team defeated the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Wednesday night. The final score was 72-57 in favor of the Panthers. 
 
Old Westbury now advances to 6-5 on the season and holds a 1-2 Skyline Conference record. 
 
The Panthers struck first with a pair of free-throws from Aiddan Smith. The Bears responded quick with a three-pointer of their own to spark a small run. The Bears would go on a run through the 15-minute mark in the first half, taking a 10-point lead over the Panthers. 
 
Old Westbury worked to try and close the gap. Zion Williams provided some strong shooting to help do so. By the end of the first half, the Panthers managed to close the Bear's lead top just two points. At the half, the Bears led, 34-32. 
 
It was a combination of strong offensive and defensive efforts for the Panthers that helped to propel them in the second half. Old Westbury scored quick, even sparking a 12-point run while holding the Bears scoreless. 
 
With 16:34 remaining in the half, the Panthers held a 10-point lead over SJBK. Neither side would score for nearly four minutes. The Panthers drained a three-pointer to end the drought courtesy of Amadi Lee-Kane
 
Despite some efforts by the Bears to comeback, the Panthers continued to pile on the points and grow their lead even further.
 
In the end, the Panthers walked away victorious over the Bears with a final score of 72-57. 
 
As a team, the Panthers shot the ball 42 percent from the floor throughout the game, 43 percent from behind-the-arc and 64 percent from the free-throw line. The team benefited after forcing 17 turnovers by the Bears, leading directly to 18 points for OW.
 
Amadi Lee-Kane led the team in scoring with 22 points. Lee-Kane also recorded four rebounds and three steals. Zion Williams had a very strong night as he finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Joel Ofori finished the night with eight points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will continue their road trip and conference play as the team travels to take on Farmingdale State College on Saturday, January 11. That game is scheduled to tip-off a 2 PM.
