The SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball team carried a four-point lead into the halftime break against Medgar Evers in what appeared to be a promising contest for the Panthers, but ultimately fell, 55-34, following a poor second-half shooting performance. Old Westbury ends the 2025 portion of the season at 1-8 while Medgar Evers improved to 2-8.
An evenly-matched first quarter saw the lead change hands five times. Trailing by six, 11-5, midway through the frame, the Panthers strung together the next seven points, led by three from
Brianne Belizaire, to take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter. Three points from
Thalia Fowler and field goals from both
Moneasia McCloud and
Sonasia Walker helped Old Westbury maintain a three-point lead, 19-16. The Cougars responded with five-straight foul shots to take a two-point lead. Old Westbury responded with layups from McCloud, Walker, and
Sakhmet Lewis in the final two minutes to lead 25-21 at the halftime break.
Medgar Evers opened the second half on an 18-3 run to take a commanding 39-28 lead. The Panthers struggled shooting in the second half, and would manage just six points in the remaining 12 minutes in the loss.
Walker led Old Westbury with nine points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and grabbing three steals.
Kasey Coppola followed with six points and three steals while adding 14 rebounds and a block. Belizaire and
Kyla Moore each netted five points with Moore adding three assists and Belizaire having 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Fowler led with three blocks and added three assists.
The Panthers will pause for the holidays and resume play on January 9 at Yeshiva at 11:00 AM.
