In a game that saw the lead change hands 13 times, the SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team ended the 2025 calendar year with a 70-66 victory over the William Patterson University Pioneers from the Clark Athletic Center. The win sets the Panthers at 2-9 on the season while William Patterson sits at an even 6-6.
Old Westbury was led by 23 points from Jermaine King Jr,, who added five assists and two steals.
Joel Ofori notched a double-double in the effort with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Stephon Rosch Kouassi tallied 11 points while added five rebounds.Â
The teams were evenly matched from the jump, with the largest lead of the contest going to the Pioneers at 12-5 just four minutes into the game. Seven-straight points from the Panthers would erase the lead and knot the score in what would be the first of six ties in the first half. The visitors sunk a pair of foul shots in the final second of the half to take a 31-30 lead into the locker room.Â
William Patterson would lead by five three times early in the second half, but each time the Panthers would have a response to make it a one-possession game. Six minutes into the half, an eight-point run from Old Westbury put the home team in front, 49-45. The Pioneers would respond with a mini rally of their own just two minutes later to take a one-point lead, 50-49.Â
Over the next eight minutes, the lead would change hands five more times. A jumper and foul shot from Ofori paired with a jumper from King gave the Panthers a 63-59 lead headed into the final two minutes of play the at the Pioneers would be unable to come back from.Â
Old Westbury will pick back up in the new year, beginning on January 3 at Merchant Marine at 1:00 PM.
