Men's Volleyball Defeated by Pratt in Close Five Set Battle on Thursday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team fell to the Pratt Institute Cannoneers in a narrow battle on Thursday night. Pratt took the match, 3-2.
 
The Panthers record now sits at 0-4 on the young season.
 
The first set was a close battle as the score was knotted up at 12-12. The Pratt Institute would be the first to take control going on a run to take a 19-14 lead. Old Westbury would respond with a 6-1 run tying the game at 20. 
 
The set would go the distance tied at 25 a piece, but the Panthers would finish out the set with help from back-to-back attacking errors winning 27-25. Damien Villamill led the way with five kills in the set.
 
The Cannoneers responded in the second set jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. They wouldn't look back holding at least a two-point lead for the rest of the set winning 25-20. 
 
The Pratt Institute would continue their momentum into the third set scoring the first eight points of the set. Old Westbury would slowly claw back into the set eventually cutting the lead to one at 20-19, but the Panthers could not overcome the deficit as the Cannoneers would finish out winning 25-23.
 
The fourth set began much closer as the score was knotted up at 10. The Panthers would then explode into a 16-6 run, led by Liam Eisel with four kills, winning the set 25-16 to force a fifth set. 
 
The final set began with a back and forth run from both teams with an 8-8 score. The Pratt Institute would be the first and last to make a run, scoring three straight after the tie. The Cannoneers would hold to clinch the match winning the set 15-11.
 
Three Panthers had double-digit kills throughout the night. Damien Villamill finished with 14, Liam Eisel recorded 12 and Torrence Fredericks ended with 11. Old Westbury led the way in hitting percentage, winning that battle at 63% to 31%.
 
Next up for the Panthers is a matchup on the road at Brooklyn College. The two schools met last season with Brooklyn College taking the match 3-2. That match will take place on Tuesday, February 18.
