Men's Basketball Defeated by Maritime on Saturday Afternoon to Close the 2024-25 Season

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury Men's Basketball team fell to the SUNY Maritime Privateers by a narrow margin of 88-84 in the Panthers' season finale on Saturday.
 
During the early stages of the game, it was a tight contest after a Zion Williams three-pointer would make the score 20-19 in favor of Maritime. The Privateers would then outscore the Panthers by 10 in the remainder of the opening half taking a 46-35 into the break.
 
Maritime continued to build their momentum in the second half scoring the first seven points, extending their lead to 18. The Panthers would chip away thanks to Z. Williams scoring seven points in a quick 10-2 Panthers' run to cut the deficit to 10.
 
The two sides would go back and forth with Maritime still holding their lead, 67-55. Old Westbury would take their second push with a 13-3 run, cutting the Privateer lead to just two points.
 
Maritime jumped out again with a 8-1 run pushing their lead to nine points, but the Panthers would respond with eight straight points cutting the lead back to just one.
 
It was a back and forth second half but the Privateers would hit a dagger three-pointer, taking a 81-77 lead with just 47 seconds remaining in the game. Maritime was able to hit their free throws to win the ball game. The Privateers were successful and defeated the Panthers, 88-84.
 
Zion Williams had a career-high 34 points while also dishing out five assists throughout the game. Williams has now scored double-digits in his last six games. Amadi Lee-Kane also had a strong afternoon as he dropped 23 points and had five rebounds.
 
The Panthers conclude the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 10-14 and a Skyline Conference record of 5-11. Old Westbury was able to secure non-conference victories over Hunter, Baruch, Salve Regina, York and Medgar Evers while taking down Skyline Conference rivals, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn twice as well as Purchase, Mount Saint Mary, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Old Westbury will look to continue to build over the offseason and contend for a spot in the Skyline Conference tournament in the 2025-26 season.
