Softball Rolls Past Sarah Lawrence to Secure Two Skyline Victories on Monday; Madison Danin Reaches 100 Career Hits

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team was dominant in their two wins over the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Monday. The Panthers took the two games by final scores of 15-0 and 11-1, respectively.
 
Old Westbury improves to an even 10-10 on the season and holds a Skyline Conference record of 2-0.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (15) – Sarah Lawrence (0) [Five Innings]
The Panthers got things going right away, tallying five runs in the first half of the opening frame. The first Panthers' runs came thanks to an RBI single from Ashley Pierce down the right field line, an RBI single from Layla Ramos, an RBI single from Amanda Varela and a two RBI single from Olivia Toto.
 
Holding a 5-0 lead, Old Westbury had another strong offensive inning in the second. The Panthers scored seven runs in the top of the second inning. Runs came courtesy of a two RBI single from Kaylin McDonald, anther RBI single from Toto, an RBI ground out by Alaina Reilly, Amanda Varela (who reached on an error) and a two RBI double from Zoe Rivera.
 
OW's third inning run was scored thanks to Pierce who blasted a homer to left field to make it a 12-0 ballgame.
 
The Panthers continued the power as Layla Ramos sent one over the fence for a home run in the top of the fifth inning. Ramos' homer scored two runs.
 
Following the fifth inning home run, the Panthers would close out the game and defeat the Gryphons, 15-0.
 
In addition to her two hits, three RBIs and a run, Layla Ramos looked incredible from the circle. The lefty ace tossed a complete game shutout and held a no-hitter through the fifth inning. Ramos struck out eight batters.
 
At the dish, Zoe Rivera went a perfect 4-4 with two RBIs and a run. Ashley Pierce went 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs including a home run. Kaylin McDonald had a strong outing as she recorded three hits, two RBIs and a run. Olivia Toto went 2-3 at the plate and had three RBIs and a run. Madison Danin recorded a hit, which was the 100th of her career. Danin also tacked on two runs on the day.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (11) – Sarah Lawrence (1) [Five Innings]
 
The Panthers' offense continued to shine in the second game of the day.
 
Old Westbury got things going with another big opening inning. The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning thanks to a two RBI single to left center field from Ashley Pierce. Morgan Albright and h grounded out for an RBI.
 
In the second inning, the Panthers tacked on four runs as Phylicia Cangemi grounded out on a sacrifice bunt for an RBI, Alaina Reilly hit an RBI single up the middle, and another Pierce home run (second of the day).
 
Holding a 7-0 lead, the Panthers let up the only Gryphons' run of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Old Westbury added four insurance runs in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Olivia Toto, Stella Apuzzi and Albright reaching on errors and an RBI single from Jenna Gaspa.
 
The Panthers held strong and walked away with their second victory, 11-1.
 
Ashley Pierce continued her strong day going 2-2 from the plate with four RBIs and two runs. Pierce homered for the second time. Phylicia Cangemi, Jenna Gaspa, Morgan Albright, Olivia Toto and Alaina Reilly each recorded an RBI.
 
In the circle, Hailey Ragozine pitched the entire game, allowing just two hits and a run. Ragozine looked impressed as she struck out 10 batters and allowed no walks.
 
Next up, the Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 15 for another Skyline Conference battle. The Panthers will return home and play host to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The first game from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex is scheduled for 4 PM.
