Softball Secures Two Conference Wins with Sweep Over Purchase on Sunday

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury softball team excelled on Sunday with a sweep of the Panthers of Purchase College. The final scores were 6-0 and 14-0, respectively.
 
Old Westbury improves to 16-16 overall on the season. The Panthers sit at 6-6 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (6) – Purchase (0)
 
The Panthers of Old Westbury got things going in the top of the second inning with one run on three hits. Ashley Pierce led off with a single to left field. Madison Danin then followed Pierce with a double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Amanda Varela would single to center field, allowing Pierce to score.
 
With a 1-0 lead, Old Westbury tacked on another run in the top of the third as Alaina Reilly came up with a big double. Pierce managed to single down the left field line to score Reilly, making it a 2-0 game in favor of OW.
 
Old Westbury would score again in the top of the fifth inning. Reilly reached base on an error and Pierce walked. Two at-bats later, Ashleigh Stewart singled up the middle to score Reilly.
 
With a 3-0 lead, the Panthers of Old Westbury put together a big sixth inning. Varela led off with a single. Madison Muehling then singled but was caught out at second base, not before Varela was able to score.
 
Zoe Rivera then homered for two RBIs as Juliana Vasquez would also score.
 
Old Westbury closed out both the sixth and seventh innings strong in the field and would walk away with the game one victory, 6-0.
 
OW finished with 10 hits as a team. Zoe Rivera homered and finished with two RBIs and a run. Alaina Reilly recorded a hit and two runs. Ashley Pierce finished the game with three hits, one run, one RBI and a walk.  Ashleigh Stewart recorded a hit and an RBI. Amanda Varela had a strong game, with two hits, one RBI and a run.
 
In the circle, Layla Ramos was near perfect for the complete game shutout. Ramos allowed just one hit on the afternoon with no walks. Ramos struck out six batters.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (14) – Purchase (0)
 
Old Westbury got going early once again in the scoring column with a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Ashley Pierce who allowed Zoe Rivera (previously singled then advanced on a wild pitch) to score.
 
With a 1-0 lead, Old Westbury compiled a big third inning with five runs and five hits. Rivera led off with a single up the middle once again. Pierce then singled through the left side. During the next at-bat, Madison Danin hit an RBI single to score Rivera.
 
Hillary Bennett would single through the left side for two RBIs as she allowed Ashleigh Stewart and Stella Apuzzi (who pinch ran) to score.
 
Leading 6-0, OW added another run in the top of the fifth thanks to a solo home run from Danin.
 
The top of the seventh inning was massive for Old Westbury. Kaylin McDonald (who pinch hit) singled to left field. Pinch hitter, Olivia Toto then singled through the right side for an RBI as McDonald scored. A few at-bats later, the Panthers scored again as Morgan Albright drew a walk to score a run as the bases were loaded.
 
Taylor Murphy pinch hit as well and singled for an RBI. Jenna Gaspa who pinch hit for Danin drew a walk for the Panthers 13th run of the game. Old Westbury's final run came thanks to McDonald reaching on a fielder's choice to score Reilly.
 
The Panthers of Old Westbury came out on top by a comfortable 14-0 score. OW would sweep Purchase in Sunday's conference doubleheader.
 
Zoe Rivera had another strong game as she went 2-4 with two runs. Taylor Murphy recorded a hit, run and RBI. Alaina Reilly finished with two hits, two runs and two walks. Ashley Pierce recorded three hits and two RBIs. Madison Danin had two hits, two RBIs, a run and a homer. Amanda Varela recorded another two hits with a run.
 
Hillary Bennett went 2-3 at the dish with two RBIs and a run. Olivia Toto went 1-1 as a pinch hitter. Toto also recorded an RBI and a run.
 
From the circle, Hailey Ragozine impressed. Ragozine allowed just three hits over seven innings. Ragozine struck out 10 batters.
 
Next up, the Panthers continue Skyline Conference play. Old Westbury will play host to the Bears of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday, April 29. The first game is scheduled for 5 PM from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
