Baseball Concludes Regular Season on a Winning Note with Conference Split Against St. Joseph’s-Long Island on Thursday

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team split their doubleheader with the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University-Long Island on Thursday. The Panthers fell 16-1 in the first game but won game two, 4-3.
 
Old Westbury concludes the regular season with an overall record of 19-16 and a Skyline Conference record of 9-11.
 
Game One- SUNY Old Westbury (1) – St. Joseph's-Long Island (16)
 
The Panthers got off to an early start as they scored a run in their opening inning. The Panthers run came thanks to an RBI single to center field from Mike Petrucelly, which scored Jacob Taormina.
 
St. Joseph's-Long Island responded right away in the bottom of the first inning with five runs of their own to make it a 5-1 game.
 
From there, after adding another run in the second inning and making it a 6-1 game, the Golden Eagles took advantage of big scoring opportunities in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Golden Eagles would add a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings while tacking on six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Panthers were unable to respond and would ultimately fall to the Golden Eagles in the first game of the day, 16-1.
 
Old Westbury recorded just four hits as a team. Jacob Taormina went 1-3 from the dish with a hit and a run. RJ Azarieh and Angleo Velez each recorded a hit. Mike Petrucelly finished the game with a hit, a walk and an RBI.
 
Louis Pizzileo got the start for the Panthers where he threw three innings. Pizzileo allowed seven earned runs and eight hits. He would strikeout three batters. Dom Gerbasio threw 1.2 innings of relief where he totaled two strikeouts and two walks. Gerbasio allowed five hits and six runs. Mike Balnis and James Reilly each threw 0.2 innings of relief. Balnis allowed five hits and three runs while Reilly allowed just one run.
 
Game Two- SUNY Old Westbury (4) – St. Joseph's-Long Island (3)
 
Once again, the Panthers got going early on the scoreboard after a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Nick Papageorge to score.
 
With a 1-0 lead through the top of the second, the Panthers let up two runs in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single.
 
Old Westbury would respond with two runs of the own in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI triple from Nick Mace and a wild pitch which then allowed Mace to score.
 
With the score now 3-2, the Panthers added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Mace continued to provide offensively for the Panthers. Mace would hit an RBI single to center field to make it a 4-2 Panther lead.
 
The Golden Eagles would score again in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double to center field and cut their deficit to just one run.
 
Old Westbury managed to hold on and close out the game thanks to the save on the mound from RJ Azarieh. The Panthers defeated the Golden Eagles, 4-3 to end their regular season on a winning note.
 
The Panthers finished with five hits as a team. Nick Mace dominated with two hits, two RBIs and a run. RJ Azarieh would also finish the game with two hits and a walk. Donny Whalen recorded a hit.
 
On the mound, Anthony Ponzo got the start and threw well through 6.2 innings, earning the win. Ponzo allowed just three runs and seven hits. Ponzo struck out three batters. In relief, RJ Azarieh took over for 2.1 innings. Azarieh recorded the save with a strikeout.
 
The Panthers will await the remainder of the conference to finish the regular season. Old Westbury finishes the regular season with an overall record of 19-16 and went 9-11 in conference play.
