Women’s Volleyball Takes Down Yeshiva in Season Opener on Monday Night

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team secured their first win of the season in their opener on Monday night over the Maccabees of Yeshiva University. The Panthers took the match, 3-1. 
 
Old Westbury opens the campaign with a 1-0 record.

Yeshiva capitalized on several Old Westbury errors to start the opening set. The Maccabees were fortunate to see 12 errors by the Panthers as well as two kills of their own.  Despite struggling in the opening set, the Panthers finished with 11 kills and 45 total attacks. 
 
The Maccabees would steal the opening set of the match, 25-20. 
 
Trailing by a set, the Panthers turned things around in the second set. The team recorded just two errors and dominated with 16 kills. The Panthers managed to walk away with the second set victory, 25-14. 
 
Old Westbury continued with their momentum in the third set. The team finished with 14 kills and 39 total attacks. The Panthers would hold Yeshiva to just four kills and just 27 total attacks. The Panthers would go on to take the third set, 25-18. 
 
In what would be the final set, the Panthers dominated yet again. Old Westbury would see 16 kills compared to YU's three.  The Panthers saw 45 total attacks and eight errors. OW would go on to take the fourth set, 25-17 to win the match. 
 
Stephanie Maser led the way for the Panthers as she recorded 18 kills, four aces, one assist and 27 digs. Stephanie Velez finished the match with 13 kills, four aces, and 10 digs. Nicole Zugnoni finished the night with 11 kills and an ace. Sofia Lopez recorded 23 digs and five assists. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road for their first non-conference match of the season. The Panthers will face Brooklyn College on Thursday, September 18 at 6 PM.
