Men’s Soccer Downs Yeshiva to Secure First Conference Victory on Thursday

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -  The SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer team defeated the Maccabees of Yeshiva University on Thursday afternoon. The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Panthers. 
 
Old Westbury improves to 2-1 overall on the season and sits at 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. 
 
This marks the Panthers first victory over the Maccabees since September of 2019. 

Old Westbury would score first just under 14 minutes into the match. Ashel Santos found Johan Gran on a strong free kick. Gran would score his first goal of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of the Panthers. 
 
The Panthers kept going offensively as they added another goal just around 33 minutes into the match. Issac Cardenas found the back of the net thanks to a great pass from Henrik Ropstad
 
Yeshiva answered just over two minutes later with a goal of their own to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Panthers. 
 
The Maccabees tied the game at the 43:35-minute mark and made it a 2-2 game at halftime. 
 
 Coming out of the break, the Panthers looked to continue their offensive pressure. 
 
Just about four minutes after halftime, Ropstad would score his first goal of the afternoon to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead. 
 
With about eight minutes to-go in the match, Ropstad scored his second goal of the game off a nice assist from Jeffery Baires. 
 
The Panthers would hold on to take down the Maccabees by a final score of 4-2 and secure their first conference victory of the season. 
 
Henrik Ropstad dominated yet again. Ropstad finished with two goals and an assist in just 57 minutes of play. Johan Gran and Isaac Cardenas each scored a goal after taking just one shot. Ashel Santos and Jeffrey Baires both recorded an assist. 
 
In goal, Paul DeGennaro finished with another strong showing. He recorded seven saves after facing nine shots on goal. 
 
Next up, the Panthers will hit the road for a non-conference matchup against Lehman College. That match is set for Wednesday, September 10 at 5 PM.
