King Scores 29 at Purchase

The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team fell to the Panthers of Purchase College, 74-55 from the Purchase Gymnasium.

The visiting Panthers were led by a 29-point performance from Jermaine King Jr., who went 11-of-20 from the field and 5-of-9 from long distance, and added led with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Imole Akinwale followed with 13 points and two steals. Joel Ofori also pulled down six rebounds and added three assists and three steals.

Purchase opened the game on a 7-0 run, but seven points from king and a layup from Christian Thomas helped Old Westbury to knot the score at nine. Later, back-to-back buckets from Akinwale and King would give the visitors a 16-11 lead with 12 minutes to go in the half. The home team responded with the next six points to regain the lead, which would increase to as many as eight points, 30-22, with 3:30 on the clock. Akinwale, King, and Josh Minton each hit shots from long distance in the final minutes while also keeping Purchase off the board to give Old Westbury a 31-30 lead at the break.

Purchase would open the second half on a 9-2 run to lead 39-33. A jumper from King would bring OW within four, but that would be as close as the Panthers would come in the final 14 minutes of action as the home team shot 50 percent from the floor to close out the contest.

Old Westbury returns home on Tuesday, January 20 to take on Yeshiva University at 7:00 pm.
