OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's University, Long Island, on Saturday afternoon at Panther Park, as Stefany Donnelly scored the game-winning goal early in the second half.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Panthers broke through just 1:01 into the second half when Donnelly found the back of the net off an assist from Eleni Petri in the 47th minute. The goal gave Old Westbury the advantage it needed to secure the shutout victory.
Goalkeeper Kristen Gallagher anchored the Panthers defensively, recording seven saves across 90 minutes to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard. St. Joseph's-L.I. finished with 10 shots, including seven on target, but Gallagher and the Old Westbury defense held firm throughout the contest.
The Panthers recorded six shots, with six on goal, as they looked to extend their lead in the second half. Old Westbury created additional opportunities late in the contest, but St. Joseph's goalkeeper Kristin Vahle made five saves to keep the game within reach.
The Golden Eagles continued to search for an equalizer in the closing minutes, but the Panthers maintained their defensive pressure to preserve the one-goal advantage and claim the Skyline Conference victory.
