KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The Old Westbury men's soccer team fell to Merchant Marine, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Tomb Field.
Merchant Marine opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Cal Lutz found the back of the net off an assist from Robert Derwin, giving the Mariners a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Panthers continued to battle in the second half, with Jeffrey Baires coming close to finding the equalizer when his shot struck the crossbar in the 69th minute. Old Westbury also saw shots from Marcelo Huaman and Johan Gran, but Merchant Marine goalkeeper Ethan Howell kept the Panthers off the scoreboard.
Merchant Marine added an insurance goal in the 80th minute, with Lutz scoring his second of the afternoon off an assist from Andrew Jung to make it 2-0.
Old Westbury goalkeeper Paul DeGennaro kept the Panthers within striking distance throughout the contest, recording seven saves on the afternoon.
The Panthers take on St. Joe's Brooklyn at Panther Park on Tuesday at 3pm.
