Men's Volleyball Tops Pratt

The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team won its second-straight contest Thursday night at the Clark Athletic Center, sweeping the visiting Pratt Institute, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21).

The Panthers battled through a competitive match as the scores of each set remained close, but took advantage of effective hitting, totaling a .277 clip on the evening, and came up with series of points in key stretches to secure the victory.

The first set would see the score tied 12 times. Pratt carried a 23-20 lead late in the set, but Old Westbury closed it out with five-straight points including kills from first-years Luke Vetac and Julius Morales and senior Ashel Santos. The trend continued in set two as the teams were separated by just one point, 22-21, until three-straight Panther points sealed it for Old Westbury with kills from Morales and sophomore Torrence Fredericks. The home team was its most effective in the final set, attacking at a .306 clip with 15 kills while holding the Cannoneers to just a .065.

Morlaes led with a game-high 12 kills and added six digs. Santos and first-year Jason Giles both followed with seven digs and added seven and six digs, respectively. Giles also added two blocks to his line. Vetack and Fredericks rounded out the top scorers with six kills each with Vetack hitting at a team-best .556 clip. First-year Lucas Rogers led with 33 assists and two service aces.

Old Westbury will remain at home on Tuesday, February 17 at 6:00 pm against Medgar Evers College.
