The SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball team ended the regular season with a 67-52 victory over St. Joseph's Long Island this afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center. The win sets the Panthers at 9-17 on the season an 7-9 in Skyline Conference play and earns them the eighth-seed in next week's Conference Tournament. SJLI finishes at 12-13 (8-8 Skyline).
Jermaine King Jr. led Old Westbury with 15 points, six assists, and three steals.
Joel Ofori had a double-double for the second-straight contest with 14 points and 16 rebounds while adding three blocks, three assists, and two steals.
Imole Akinwale netted 14 points and added three assists while
Christian Thomas rounded out the top scorers with 12 points and two steals.
Neither team led by more than a possession after the first 10 minutes of the first half. SJLI would pull ahead after a 13 point run, leading 20-10 with 7:50 left in the half. Old Westbury erased the lead with a 12-point run of their own to go ahead 22-20. Six-straight points gave the Golden Eagles just enough of an advantage to outlast the Panthers and maintain a lead through the buzzer, setting the score at 32-27 at the break.
The score would be tied three more times early in the second half before a 15-2 run put the home team ahead 56-46. St. Joe's would come within seven, 56-49, with 6:39 on the clock but the Panthers finished the contest on an 11-3 run for the win.Â
Old Westbury will face top-seeded Yeshiva on Wednesday, February 25 at 8:00 PM in the opening round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.Â
