Old Westbury, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team returned to action at the Clark Athletic Center on Tuesday evening, falling to Mount St. Joseph University in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15, in non-conference play.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 4-5 overall (1-3 Skyline Conference) on the season.
In the opening set, Old Westbury showed early energy and offensive production, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before the visiting Lions responded to even the score at 4-4. From there, Mount St. Joseph gained momentum and used a strong offensive stretch to pull away and claim the first set, 25-14.
The Lions carried that momentum into the second set, building an early advantage while keeping the Panthers out of rhythm offensively. Mount St. Joseph's attack proved difficult to slow down as they secured the set 25-16 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Looking to avoid the sweep, the Panthers battled in the third set but once again struggled to contain the Lions' balanced offensive attack. Mount St. Joseph closed out the match with a 25-15 set victory.
Old Westbury was limited offensively throughout the match, finishing with 14 total kills compared to 38 kills by Mount St. Joseph.
Despite the loss, the Panthers received a balanced offensive effort as four players recorded three kills each, including senior outside hitter Ashel Santos, sophomore middle blocker Torrence Fredericks, freshman outside hitter Luke Vetack, and freshman middle blocker Jason Giles. Sophomore right-side hitter Shane Kielb also added two kills while hitting .500 on the night.
Freshman setter Lucas Rogers paced the Panthers' offense with 10 assists, while Fredericks led the team defensively with four digs.
