Clermont, Fla. – Coming off an impressive 24–18 season with a 12–6 mark in Skyline Conference action, which included a postseason appearance against Manhattanville University, the SUNY Old Westbury softball team opened its 2026 season Sunday morning in Clermont, Florida as part of the Spring Games.
During the trip, the Panthers will face Plattsburgh State, Franklin & Marshall College, Bowdoin College, Coe College, Edgewood University, Buffalo State, University of Wisconsin–River Falls, and Hartwick College.
Old Westbury began game one of the Spring Games against Plattsburgh State, where the Panthers were defeated 4–0 by the Cardinals and held scoreless in their season opener. With the loss, Old Westbury falls to 0–1 on the season.
Plattsburgh State generated early offense and maintained momentum throughout the contest as the Cardinals plated four runs while keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard. Old Westbury looked to create opportunities offensively but struggled to string together hits against the Cardinals pitching staff.
Despite the loss, the Panthers showed some positives at the plate finishing the game with five total hits from five different players. Freshman Jessica Feerick, senior Ashley Pierce, freshman Yelina Arias, sophomore Olivia Toto, and junior Amanda Varela each recorded a hit for Old Westbury as the Panthers worked to generate offensive momentum throughout the contest.
Old Westbury was able to put runners on base throughout the game with five hits and a walk, but was unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Freshman Katie Knecht also showed patience at the plate drawing a walk, while junior Phylicia Cangemi added a sacrifice hit to move a runner into scoring position.
Defensively, the Panthers pitching staff worked through multiple innings of pressure while limiting the Cardinals to four runs in the season opener. Freshman Olivia DeRose and junior Hailey Ragozine both saw action in the circle for Old Westbury as the Panthers battled through several scoring threats from Plattsburgh State.
