Myrtle Beach, S.C. — Following a tough 14-4 loss to Ursinus College on Sunday afternoon at the Myrtle Beach Spring Games in South Carolina, the SUNY Old Westbury baseball team continued play on Tuesday afternoon looking to put themselves back in the win column.
The Panthers (4-2) returned to the diamond Tuesday afternoon taking on Western Connecticut State. Old Westbury defeated the Wolves 15-7 and now improve to 4-2 on the season. Western Connecticut State drops to 4-5 on the year.
To start the game, neither team was able to get on the board in the first inning of action. However, in the second inning, the Panthers came out scorching hot, jumping out to a 7-0 lead over the Wolves.
The third inning proved to be similar to the first, as neither team was able to produce any runs. Old Westbury was outscored in the fourth inning by the Wolves, 3-1, but remained firmly in control of the game.
The Panthers were able to put the game away in the sixth inning, erupting for seven runs while shutting out the Wolves in the inning, making any comeback attempt difficult.
Old Westbury used a dominant combination of a balanced offensive attack backed by a strong defensive presence that limited Western Connecticut State from generating consistent offensive momentum.
As a team, the Panthers finished the game with 15 runs on 16 hits with just two errors.
Leading the Panthers' offense was senior JT Torres, who finished with two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a double. Junior Chris Bartnik added a strong performance at the plate with three hits and an RBI, while junior Mike Tiseo contributed two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Additional contributions came from sophomore JJ Palumbo and sophomore Nick Miller, who each recorded two hits and two RBIs, while sophomore Dean Pasolini also drove in a pair of runs. junior Brandon Hernandez added to the offensive effort with two hits and one RBI.
On the mound, senior Dennis Lynch earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing just two hits and no earned runs, while striking out four.
With the win, the Panthers finish the Myrtle Beach Spring Games with a 2-2 record.
What's Next?
With the win, Old Westbury will now begin preparation to return home to Panther Park, where they will open Skyline Conference play on Saturday, March 21 at 12:00 PM in a doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College (NY).
