Bronxville, N.Y. — Following a straight-set loss to Manhattanville University on Saturday, the SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team responded Thursday night with a hard-fought 3-2 Skyline Conference road victory over Sarah Lawrence College at the Campbell Sports Center 25,14, 25,18,25,21, 25,21, 15,11,.
With the win, Old Westbury improved to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while Sarah Lawrence fell to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in Skyline action.
The match opened with Sarah Lawrence taking the first set, 25-14, but the Panthers answered quickly by claiming the second set, 25-18, to even the match at one set apiece. Old Westbury then took the third set, 25-21, to move in front, 2-1. Sarah Lawrence responded in the fourth with a 25-21 victory to force a decisive fifth set. In the final set, the Panthers overcame an early 4-1 deficit and closed out the match with a 15-11 win to secure the five-set road victory.
Old Westbury was led offensively by Jason Giles, who recorded a team-high 11 kills while hitting .455, while Torrence Fredericks added 10 kills. The duo combined for 21 total kills to pace the Panthers' attack. Julius Morales chipped in 8 kills, while Ashel Santos finished with 6 kills and 17 assists. Lucas Rogers added 20 assists, and Kevin Alarcon anchored the defense with 24 digs. Shane Kielb also contributed 3 kills in the victory.
As a team, Old Westbury totaled 43 kills, 40 assists, 67 digs, and 15 block assists in the win.
