Brooklyn, N.Y. – Fresh off a five-set 3-2 road win over Sarah Lawrence College, the SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team looked to make it two straight victories as it traveled to Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline Conference matchup against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn. The Panthers were unable to keep the momentum going, falling to the Bears in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-13, at The Hill Center.
With the loss, Old Westbury dropped to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in Skyline play.
Old Westbury battled closely with St. Joseph's Brooklyn throughout the opening set and even held the lead at points before the Bears rallied late to escape with a narrow 25-23 win.
The second set was once again competitive early on, as the Panthers battled to a 12-12 tie. From there, St. Joseph's Brooklyn used a strong offensive run to take control of the frame and eventually closed out the set, 25-18, to move ahead 2-0 in the match.
Trying to avoid the sweep, Old Westbury quickly found itself in an early hole in the third set. The Panthers managed to trim the deficit to two points, but the Bears answered with another offensive surge and pulled away to seal the match with a 25-13 set victory.
Ashel Santos paced the Panthers with 12 assists and added two service aces, while Torrence Fredericks led the attack with nine kills and two block assists. Damian Villamil contributed four kills, one ace, two assists, seven digs and one block assist. Jason Giles added five kills, while Julius Morales totaled eight digs and two block assists. Kevin Alarcon also chipped in eight digs defensively for Old Westbury.
As a team, the Panthers finished with 23 kills, 21 assists, four service aces, 33 digs and three total blocks.

Old Westbury will look to regroup as it returns home to the Clark Athletic Center for a Skyline Conference matchup against Purchase College on March 23, at 6:00 PM
