Old Westbury, N.Y. — Despite coming off a tough pair of losses to the University of Mount St. Vincent and St. Joseph's University Brooklyn in straight-set matches, the SUNY Old Westbury men's volleyball team continued its four-game homestand at the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers were defeated by St. Joseph's University Long Island in three straight sets, 25-6, 25-14, 25-20.
With the loss, Old Westbury drops to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in Skyline Conference play, while St. Joseph's Long Island improves to 6-8 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
The Panthers struggled to get things going offensively in the opening set against a strong Golden Eagles attack, falling behind early and unable to reach double digits as St. Joseph's Long Island took the first set 25-6. The visitors continued to maintain momentum in the second set, securing a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Old Westbury showed signs of resilience in the third and final set, improving their offensive production and cutting into the Golden Eagles lead midway through the frame. The Panthers managed to bring the deficit within one point at 14-13 before St. Joseph's Long Island regained control and eventually secured the set 25-20 to complete the sweep.
Despite the loss, the Panthers received several solid individual performances. Sophomore middle blocker Torrence Fredericks led the Panthers with eight kills, while junior outside hitter Luke Vetack added six kills and two service aces. Freshman middle blocker Jason Giles contributed four kills and two digs.
Freshman setter Lucas Rogers directed the Panthers offense with a team-high 20 assists, while also adding two digs. Defensively, Fredericks recorded four digs, while senior outside hitter Ashel Santos finished with two digs and a block for Old Westbury.
As a team, Old Westbury finished the match with 21 kills on 73 attempts, while St. Joseph's Long Island recorded 40 kills in the contest.

The Panthers will look to regroup as they return to action on Tuesday, March 10, when they host Mount St. Joseph University at the Clark Athletic Center. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
