KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team fell in both ends of a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Bartoszek Field. The Panthers dropped game one, 3-1, before falling in an extra-inning battle, 5-4, in game two.
Despite the results, Old Westbury showed competitiveness throughout the day, including forcing extra innings in the nightcap.
GAME 1 OLD WESTBURY: 1 Merchant Marine Academy: 3
Old Westbury jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Brandon Hernandez delivered an RBI single to score JT Torres and give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers held the lead into the fifth inning before Merchant Marine responded with a two-run triple to take control. The Mariners added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the 3-1 win.
Old Westbury finished with six hits, with JJ Palumbo leading the way with a two-hit performance. Hernandez accounted for the Panthers' lone RBI, while Torres and Nick Miller also recorded hits.
GAME 2 OLD WESTBURY: 4 Merchant Marine Academy: 5
The Panthers once again struck first in game two, taking an early lead in the opening inning. After Merchant Marine evened the score, Old Westbury regained the advantage in the fifth inning and later extended its lead in the eighth.
Trailing late, Merchant Marine responded with runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game and force extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, the Mariners delivered a walk-off RBI single to secure the 5-4 victory.
JJ Palumbo and Brandon Hernandez each recorded multi-hit performances in the contest, while Mike Tiseo led the Panthers with two RBIs. JT Torres added a strong performance, scoring twice and driving in a run.
