OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a 9-4 non-conference victory over Saint Elizabeth University on Tuesday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
Old Westbury used a big fifth inning and steady offensive production throughout the lineup to pull away from Saint Elizabeth and secure the win.
After falling behind early, the Panthers responded with three runs in the second inning to take their first lead of the game. Noah Tannenbaum delivered an RBI single, while JT Torres worked a bases-loaded walk to help Old Westbury move in front.
James Reilly gave the Panthers the lead again in the third inning with an RBI triple to center field, scoring Mike Petrucelly and making it 4-3.
The Panthers broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to extend their lead. Old Westbury took advantage of walks, passed balls and defensive miscues, while Mike Tiseo added an RBI single to help push the advantage to 9-3.
Saint Elizabeth added a run in the ninth, but Old Westbury held on to secure the Senior Day victory.
WHAT OLD WESTBURY DID WELL
Old Westbury capitalized on scoring opportunities, producing nine runs on 10 hits while drawing nine walks.
The Panthers applied consistent pressure and took advantage of miscues to create separation in the middle innings.
Old Westbury's pitching staff settled in after the early innings, with Joe Cavallo earning the win and Mike Balnis closing the game with the save.
