OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury softball team celebrated Senior Day in style, clinching a Skyline Conference Tournament berth with a doubleheader sweep over Purchase College on Friday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The Panthers took Game 1, 3-1, before closing out the regular season with an 8-0 shutout victory in Game 2.
Prior to the game, Old Westbury honored its graduating seniors for their contributions to the program, capping off the day with a pair of strong performances on the field.
GAME 1: Old Westbury 3, Purchase 1
Old Westbury used timely hitting and a strong outing in the circle to take the opener.
After breaking through in the second inning, the Panthers regained control late with a two-run sixth inning. Camila Uribe delivered an RBI groundout before Gianna Pulsonetti added an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1.
Olivia DeRose earned the win with a complete-game performance, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits while keeping Purchase off balance throughout.
Pulsonetti led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Arianna Valle and Yelina Arias each scored runs in the victory.
GAME 2: Old Westbury 8, Purchase 0 (5 inn.)
The Panthers carried their momentum into Game 2 with a dominant performance on both sides.
Old Westbury broke the game open early, scoring three runs in the second inning before erupting for four more in the third to take full control. The Panthers added a final run in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
Phylicia Cangemi led the offense with a standout performance, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and two triples. Jessica Feerick added two doubles and drove in two runs, while Aliya Feerick finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Olivia Toto also contributed with two hits and a run.
In the circle, Hailey Ragozine was dominant, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout while striking out nine batters over five innings.
WHAT OLD WESTBURY DID WELL?
The Panthers executed at a high level in all phases to secure the sweep and postseason berth.
In the circle, both DeRose and Ragozine delivered strong performances. DeRose controlled Game 1 with poise, while Ragozine dominated Game 2 with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Defensively, Old Westbury made key plays and limited scoring opportunities, helping maintain control throughout the doubleheader.
