Panthers knock off #4 St. Joseph’s Brooklyn to advance in Skyline postseason

Old Westbury takes down Bears 6-2 behind DeRose’s win and timely offense

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The SUNY Old Westbury softball team picked up a postseason victory on Tuesday night, defeating No. 4 St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, 6-2, in the Skyline Conference Softball Championship at Farmingdale State College.

With the win, the Panthers advance to the next round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Old Westbury broke through in the third inning, scoring four runs to take control of the game.

Ashley Pierce opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring home Aliya Feerick. The Panthers continued to apply pressure as Yelina Arias reached on an error, allowing Arianna Valle and Pierce to score. Camila Uribe followed with an RBI single to bring home Katie Knecht and extend the lead to 4-0.

Old Westbury added another run in the sixth when Pierce grounded out to second base, scoring Madison Muehling and pushing the lead to 5-0.

Amanda Varela added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double to left field, scoring Olivia Toto and giving the Panthers a 6-0 advantage.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Old Westbury held on to secure the 6-2 postseason victory.

WHAT OLD WESTBURY DID WELL?
Old Westbury delivered timely offense in key moments, scoring four runs in the third inning to take control early.

The Panthers also applied pressure throughout the lineup, finishing with nine hits while taking advantage of defensive miscues.

In the circle, Skyline Rookie of the year Olivia DeRose earned the win as Old Westbury held St. Joseph's Brooklyn to just one hit.
