OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The Old Westbury women's soccer team battled Manhattanville to the final minutes Wednesday evening at Panther Park, but the Panthers fell, 2-1, after the Valiants scored the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Manhattanville struck first in the seventh minute when Jazleen Vega scored off an assist from Jenna Moraglia. Old Westbury quickly answered just 24 seconds later, as Jamie Garcia Sorto found the back of the net off a pass from Zamira Yamileth Mena Sequeira to even the score at 1-1.
In the 18th minute the Valiants were awared a penalty kick but Kristen Gallagher came up big with a huge save to keep the game tied.
The Panthers and Valiants remained tied throughout the majority of the second half. Old Westbury goalkeeper Kristen Gallagher kept the Panthers in the match, making seven saves, including several stops during Manhattanville's second-half pressure.
Old Westbury had opportunities to regain the lead, including a shot on goal from Mena Sequeira that was saved in the 63rd minute. Manhattanville continued to generate chances, but Gallagher and the Panthers' defense kept the game level.
With the clock winding down, Manhattanville regained the lead in the 88th minute when Moraglia scored off an assist from Vega. The Panthers were unable to find an equalizer before the final whistle.
