Entering his eighth season as hitting/outfield coach with Old Westbury, Chris Smith was the No. 1 pick (7th Overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in 2001.
Under his tutelage over the past eight seasons, Smith's hitters have collected major awards ranging from All-America (1), All-New York State Region (10), Skyline Conference Player of the Year (3), All- Skyline Conference (18) and in 2010, his first All-Region Golden Glove for Center Field selection. In 2009, 2011 and 2012, he was named to the Skyline Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
Smith started his undergraduate career at Florida State University as an outfielder, where he led the Seminoles to a pair of trips to the NCAA College World Series in 1999 and 2000. Smith was named All-American in 2000 in addition to garnering a pair of All-ACC laurels in 1999 and 2000. In 2000, he was selected to the USA Baseball Olympic Team. After his sophomore season, he transferred to Cumberland University where he was both a pitcher and outfielder. While at Cumberland, he struck out 115 batters in 84.1 innings while holding opponents to a .194 average. As an outfielder at Cumberland, Smith hit .414 with 17 home runs. He was named the 2001 NAIA National Collegiate Player/Pitcher of the Year.
A native Long Islander, Smith played at Wantagh High School, where he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and New York Player of the Year in 1998. Smith won the Nassau County Diamond Award which is given annually to the best high school player in Nassau County. In his senior year, he led Wantagh to the New York State Class B Championship, Long Island Class B Championship and Nassau County Class B Championship.
During his six-year professional career, Smith started out in the Gulf Coast Rookie League with the Baltimore Orioles in 2001. He played in the Carolina League (High A) in 2001 with the Frederick Keys and then in 2002 with the Bluefield Orioles in the Appalachian League (Rookie A) before suffering a left shoulder tear forcing him to undergo surgery, forcing him to miss the entire 2003 season to rehabilitate his shoulder. Smith came back in 2004 with the Aberdeen Ironbirds of the New York-Penn League (Short Season A). He played the 2005 season with the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League (Single A). Smith was released by the Baltimore Orioles in 2005 and signed by the Long Island Ducks in 2006 to play in the Atlantic League. His career came to an end in 2006 with the Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League, the triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.
Smith resides in Wantagh, New York.
