Donald Massmann was appointed Head Coach of the Men's Golf Team at SUNY Old Westbury in 2016.
Since his arrival, the team has produced the most consistent, successful seasons in program history. In 2023, he was named Skyline Conference Coach of the Year after leading the team to a program-best second place finish in the conference championship. That followed 2022, when he had earned Co-Coach of the Year Honors in Skyline.
In 2021, he led the team to third place in the conference, tying what had been the program best finish in 2009. In 2023, Massmann led the team to finish second in the Skyline Conference.
During his tenure, he has had eight all-conference honors awarded to his players, including 2023 First Team All-Conference Honoree David Seo and 2023 Second Team All-Conference Honorees Robert Martini and Sean Mendyk. Others who earned all-conference nods during Coach Massman's tenure include Kihei Hayashi (2018, second team), Anthony Mazzella (2019, second team), Conor Maloney (2021, second team), Justin Dubler (2021, second team), and Sean Mendyk (2022, second team).
Massmann arrived at Old Westbury after serving seven seasons (2004-10) as the boys and girls head golf coach at Brentwood High School. A United States Golf Association (USGA) member since 1998, Massmann volunteered at the 109th U.S. Open on the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in 2009.
Beginning in 1989, Massmann worked for the Brentwood Union Free School District as a physical education teacher. Massmann also began coaching the junior varsity girls basketball team at Brentwood High School in 2015.
A native of West Babylon, New York, Massmann was a two-sport member of the basketball and lacrosse teams at West Babylon High School. Massmann earned his associates degree from Farmingdale State College in 1980 before studying athletic administration at St. John’s University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1983. During his time at St. John’s, Massmann served as a student athletic trainer on the sports medicine staff. Massmann then graduated with his master’s degree in liberal arts from Stony Brook University in 1993.
Massmann and his wife Holly have two daughters, Erica and Melissa.
