PHOENIX, AZ-The SUNY College at Old Westbury
men's basketball team dropped an 89-80 decision to the University
of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Cactus Jam Hoop Classic at South
Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday
evening. Old Westbury moves to 3-5 on the season while the
Titans of UW-Oshkosh climb to 5-5 on the year.
Old Westbury was unable to keep pace with the Titans in the
opening half, trailing by 18 points at halftime, 47-29. Old
Westbury went on a run in the second stanza to outscore the Titans,
51-42, but UW-Oshkosh would outlast the Panthers, 89-80.
Old Westbury posted four Panthers in double-digits lead by
junior Hakiem George (New York, N.Y.), who scored 21 points, but
the Panthers could not overcome Matt Miller and the Titans.
Junior Bill Reese followed with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from
the field while senior Garthlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) and
junior Shane DeNully (Bronx, N.Y.) had 12 and 11 points,
respectively. James had two steals as DeNully registered a
game-best seven assists and three steals. Senior
Harold-Petit-Maitre chipped in with eight points and two steals.
Matt Miller poured in a game-high 34 points, with six triples
and knocked down 14-of-14 from the line to pace UW-Oshkosh.
DJ Marsh was strong on the boards, pulling down a game-leading 16
rebounds to go with 17 points, five assists and two steals.
Dane Seckar-Ander scored 18 points on 14-of-16 shooting from the
charity stripe.
The Panthers went 7-for-13 from beyond the arc, while the Titans
hit nine of 20. Old Westbury forced the Titans into 12
turnovers and came away with eight steals. UW-Oshkosh
dominated the boards, holding a 41-16 advantage.
The Green and Ivory will pick up their dribble next on Monday,
December 29th at South Mountain Community College with a
4:00 p.m. contest with Lewis & Clark College. Old
Westbury finishes play at the Cactus Jam Hoop Classic on Tuesday
with a 4:00 p.m. game against Christopher Newport University.
