BROOKLYN, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) - The SUNY College at
Old Westbury women's volleyball team picked up a pair of
non-conference victories on Saturday to push their win streak to
nine, sweeping the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bear and Brooklyn Bridges
in Brooklyn, New York. The nine game winning streak is the
longest since the 2005 squad won eight straight before finishing
the season 21-10. Old Westbury improved to 13-13 on the
season.
Sophomore Tynishia George (Medford, NY) tallied double-digit
kills to pace the Panthers at 12 put-aways against St.
Joseph's-Brooklyn. Sophomore Tonya Miller (Nyack, NY) lead
the squad in the blocks column with two rejections and one block
assist. Sophomore Kristina Giordano (Huntington Station, NY)
had a consistent effort, totaling 15 assists, nine digs, seven
service aces, three kills and two block assists.
As a team, Old Westbury hit .150 with 29 total kills and 17
errors in 80 total attacks. Old Westbury's best hitting came
in the third set with nine kills and three errors in 22 total
attacks for .273 hitting percentage.
In the second match of the day, Giordano led the Panthers with
19 assists and six aces against Brooklyn. She added three
kills while junior Ashley Greene (Bay Shore, NY) and junior Tanaya Vinson (Woodside, NY) led the team with 10 and seven kills,
respectively. Greene hit .769 on 13 swings with zero
errors while Vinson finished with a .700 hitting percentage with
zero errors in 10 total attacks. Freshman Shari Quiles
(Bronx, NY) led the Panthers with seven digs to go along with four
kills and three service aces. Tonya Miller led the Panthers
with two solo blocks and two block assists.
Old Westbury hit .463 as a team with 28 total kills and three
errors on 54 total attacks. The second set featured their
best hitting with 12 kills and one error on 20 swings to hit
.550
FARMINGDALE STATE NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old
Westbury is set to tangle with the Rams of Farmingdale State on
Thursday, October 22nd in a Skyline Conference battle at
the Clark Athletic Center for the annual Breast Cancer Awareness
match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and all fans are
encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer.
